Erie’s history is fascinating.

Its earliest settlers were an inspired group of individuals whose challenges included untold hardships.

* Imagine for a moment that it’s 1805 in the middle of winter, and an early settler’s hearth fire goes out. To re-light this life-sustaining flame, it was necessary to trudge a mile or so to the nearest neighbor’s cabin to ask them for a lit ember. The trick was to then keep that ember burning as it was carried back to the settler’s roughly-hewn log residence. In the snow. And it’s five degrees.
